Most washing machines only get attention when something breaks. A routine service catches the small problems first: a clogged filter, a worn belt, a door seal starting to tear. Those are cheap to deal with early and expensive once they’ve damaged something else.
Here’s what a proper service covers, how often you actually need one, and what you can do yourself between visits.
What’s included in a washing machine service
A good service is a full inspection plus the cleaning and adjustments that keep the machine running smoothly. Ours covers:
| Check | What we do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Inlet hoses and filter | Check hoses for cracks and clean the small mesh filter where water enters | A clogged inlet filter means slow filling and longer cycles. It’s common with borewell and tanker water |
| Drain or lint filter | Clean the drain pump filter (front-load) or lint filter (top-load and semi-automatic) | Coins, hair and lint here are the most common cause of draining problems |
| Door seal | Inspect the rubber gasket on front-loaders for tears, mould and trapped debris | A damaged seal is a common source of leaks and bad smells |
| Drum and bearings | Check for play in the drum and listen for rumbling during spin | Worn bearings get louder and can damage the drum if ignored. See noise problems |
| Suspension | Check shock absorbers and springs | Worn suspension causes shaking and walking during spin |
| Belt | Check tension and wear on belt-driven machines | A slipping belt means weak spinning. See belt problems |
| Levelling and drain hose | Level the machine and check the drain hose isn’t kinked or too low | Prevents vibration, siphoning and slow draining |
| Test run | Run a wash and spin, check for error codes and confirm the controls respond | Confirms everything works before we leave |
If we find a fault during the service, we explain it and give you the price before doing anything. You decide whether to go ahead.
How often should you service a washing machine?
- Once a year for a typical household doing a few loads a week.
- Every six months if you wash daily, have a large family, or use borewell or tanker water. Hard water and sediment clog filters and valves faster.
- Before it’s out of warranty is also a good time to have it checked, so any existing fault can still be claimed from the brand.
Semi-automatic machines have fewer parts but still benefit from a yearly check of the belt, the spin tub brake and the drain valve. See our semi-automatic problems guide.
Signs your machine needs a service now
- Clothes come out wetter than they used to
- Water drains slowly or leaves a little behind
- The machine is louder during spin, or it shakes more
- A musty smell from the drum or door seal
- Cycles take longer than normal, or filling is slow
- Small drips under the machine
- An occasional error code that clears when you restart
Any one of these is worth a service before it becomes a repair.
All brands and types, Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 8 PM. Inspection visit ₹200–450 depending on machine type, with the service charge confirmed before we start.
Simple monthly care you can do yourself
- Clean the drain filter. On front-loaders it’s behind a small flap at the bottom front. Put a towel down first, since some water will come out.
- Wipe the door seal and pull out anything caught in the folds.
- Leave the door or lid open after washing so the drum dries out.
- Clean the detergent drawer, where residue and mould build up.
- Run the tub-clean programme (or the hottest cycle) with the drum empty.
- Don’t overload. It strains the bearings, suspension and belt.
- Use the right detergent. Front-loaders need low-foam front-load detergent. Too much foam stresses the pump and leaves residue.
Service or repair: what’s the difference?
A service is preventive: inspection, cleaning and small adjustments on a machine that still works. A repair fixes something that has failed, such as a pump, motor, board or bearing. If your machine has already stopped working, book a repair instead. If it’s old and the repair is expensive, read our guide on whether to repair or replace.
If you have several machines or want regular visits, ask us about an annual maintenance contract when you call.
