Front-loaders deliberately lock the door during and just after a cycle. If yours won’t open, work through these steps before assuming the lock is broken — and never force the door, which can crack it.
Why the door won’t open
- Water still in the drum — the machine won’t unlock if it senses water inside (a safety feature).
- Safety lock delay — many machines stay locked for 1–3 minutes after a cycle ends.
- Cycle still running or paused mid-cycle.
- Power cut during the cycle — the lock can stay engaged with no power.
- Faulty door lock/interlock — the mechanism itself has failed.
How to open it safely
- Wait 2–3 minutes after the cycle ends — the lock often releases on its own.
- Check for water — if the drum has water, run a drain/spin cycle to empty it (see our drainage guide if it won’t drain).
- Power-cycle the machine — switch off at the wall for a minute, then on; this resets the lock.
- Use the emergency release — most front-loaders have a small lever behind the pump filter flap at the bottom front. Open the flap and pull/turn it to release the door.
- Do not force the door — pulling hard can break the handle or hinge.

When to call a technician
If the drum is empty, you’ve power-cycled, and used the emergency release but the door is still stuck — or if it locks/unlocks erratically — the door interlock needs replacing. It’s an affordable, common repair.
Door-lock failures are especially common on IFB and Bosch front-loaders. We carry the locks and repair across Bangalore.
